Our Classes

Here at North Canterbury Dog Training we offer a range of training classes designed to build confidence, improve behavior, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Whether you're starting from scratch or advancing your dog's skills, we have a class for you!

Important Mid- Winter Break

​ No classes will run on July 14, 21, or 28 as our instructors (and dogs!) take a short winter break. This includes all club nights.

We’ll be back full of energy in August with fresh courses!

Dog Walk

Introduction Class

$95.00 for 6 weeks course

Perfect for: Puppies and dogs new to training.

This 6-week foundational course is designed for dogs of all ages who are just starting their training journey. It’s the perfect way to build good habits and create a strong training foundation. Topics covered include:


✔️ Basic obedience commands (sit, stay, down, recall)
✔️ Loose-leash walking and polite greetings
✔️ Socialization with people and dogs
✔️ Confidence-building exercises
✔️ Problem-solving for common behavioral issues

This class is great for anyone wanting a well-mannered dog at home and in public!

Canine Good Basics

$40 for a 6 week course

This class is designed as a stepping stone before CGC, helping dogs build confidence and reliability in real-world situations. Training includes:

✔️ Strengthening obedience skills (sit, stay, leash walking)
✔️ Socialization and confidence-building
✔️ Polite greetings and calm behavior in public
✔️ Handling for vet and grooming visits

Once dogs master these skills, they’re ready to move on to CGC training!

Dogs with Dog Walker

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

Membership Required

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is a widely recognized standard for well-behaved dogs, preparing them for the official CGC certification. At NCDTC, we guide your dog through the following levels to build strong behavior and social skills:

✔️ Foundation
✔️ Bronze
✔️ Silver
✔️ Gold

Each level helps your dog develop essential skills, with each milestone progressing toward the final CGC assessment. At the end of the program, dogs can take the official CGC test to earn their certification.

Scent Work

Scent work is an exciting and mentally stimulating activity that builds confidence and enhances focus. This class is designed for both beginners and advanced dogs, with progressive training levels.

Introductory Scent

$45 (includes scent oil pack)

6 week course

✔️ Building enthusiasm for searching

✔️ Learning to detect and indicate on specific scents

✔️ Strengthening teamwork between dog and handler

✔️ Fun and engaging scent games

Advance Scent

Membership Required

✔️ Expanding searches to more complex environments (indoors, outdoors, vehicles)
✔️ Container hides and increasing difficulty with distractions
✔️ Preparing for scent work trials and competitions

This is a great way to give your dog a job they love while improving their problem-solving skills!

Dog Training

Obedience

Membership Required

This class helps reinforce obedience skills and improve real-world reliability. Training includes:


✔️ Advanced sit, stay, and recall
✔️ Off-leash control and impulse management
✔️ Heelwork and leash manners
✔️ Confidence-building and distraction training

Whether you're working towards competition obedience or just want a better-behaved companion, this class will give you the tools you need.

Tricks

Membership Required

Want to teach your dog cool tricks? This class covers a variety of fun and impressive behaviors, including:


✔️ Spin, rollover, and play dead
✔️ Weaving through legs and jumping through hoops
✔️ Paw shakes, bows, and waving
✔️ Custom tricks based on your dog’s abilities

Trick training is an amazing way to bond with your dog while improving focus, confidence, and coordination!
